Federal technical reports digitization

The Greater Western Library Alliance and the Center for Research Libraries
are collaborating on a pilot project to ascertain both the practicality of
and impediments to digitizing and making openly available selected pre-1975
U.S. government agency technical reports. 

The pilot project database has been named
(TRAIL - Technical Report Archive and Image Library)
and is available for your perusal at
http://digicoll.manoa.hawaii.edu/techreports/index.php.

An initial survey of libraries suggested the following agencies' reports
were favored for digitization, in order of preference:
DOE, EPA, NASA, USDA (including the Forest Service), NBS, USGS, AEC, NACA,
US Army, and the US Bureau of Mines. 

The next phase of the project will be assessment of the pilot project,
estimating costs and securing support for a full-scale effort.
